How the VLSB+C will manage AI

The Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (VLSB+C) recognises the transformative potential of AI and its capacity to enhance our internal operations and the experience of consumers and lawyers accessing our services. However, as an independent statutory authority, we will implement systems to deal with the legal and ethical dangers of using AI.

We will do this by building safeguards into our policies, procedures and strategies, making sure we reduce any potential harm to our customers. With AI still emerging and AI regulation evolving, we will remain vigilant in understanding, assessing, and addressing potential risks and impacts in line with expectations of a modern regulator.

To support this, we have designed and implemented an AI Assurance Framework. The AI Assurance Framework aims to provide a structured approach to the safe and responsible use, development and procurement of AI.

How we use AI safely and responsibly

We will primarily focus AI efforts on regulatory effectiveness and service delivery impact, while remaining open to AI opportunities that sit outside these areas, as per our 2026–2029 Strategic Plan.

We will focus on transparency and maintaining ethical standards in our use of AI, and in doing so support stakeholder trust and confidence in VLSB+C as an organisation.

We may potentially use AI as described below, based on the Australian Government's classification system for AI:

• Analytics for insights: identifies, produces or understands insights within structured or unstructured materials via comprehensive data analysis, predictive modelling and/or reporting tools.
• Workplace productivity: automates routine tasks, manages workflows, and facilitates communication.
• Corporate and enabling: supports corporate functions, including HR, finance, media and communications, and IT, by automating processes, optimising resource allocation and improving operational efficiency.
