VLSB+C welcomes the commencement of Victoria’s first Statewide Treaty Agreement

17 December 2025

The VLSB+C proudly supports Victoria’s Treaty-making process and welcomes the commencement of the Statewide Treaty on 12 December 2025.

VLSB+C CEO and Commissioner, Fiona McLeay said, "The Victorian Statewide Treaty passing into law last month was a historic moment for our state and nation."

"I would like to acknowledge the generations and decades First Peoples have spent as truth-tellers and custodians of this land for this historic Treaty to be enacted,” Fiona said.

As the VLSB+C’s Statement in support of the Victorian Treaty-making process reaffirms, this is a significant moment for VLSB+C, the regulator of the Victorian legal profession.

“Lawyers occupy a critical role in the justice system, which has enabled them to work alongside First Peoples communities and individuals to advocate for systemic reform as well as advancing First Peoples’ interests through the courts. They also represent an important safeguard in the system to defend First Peoples’ rights and protect against injustice,” the Statement says.

"At the same time, VLSB+C recognises the harmful and unjust experiences many First Peoples have had – and continue to have – within the legal system and are committed to building partnerships and opportunities with Victoria’s First Peoples to chart a path towards improving justice outcomes and promoting a culturally safe legal profession.”

The VLSB+C is proud to support First Peoples' organisations through their funding program, including the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Djirra, The Torch, and Goolum Goolum Aboriginal Co-Operative.
