Serious misconduct by lawyers is harmful to the administration of the justice, the reputation of the legal profession and the wider community – and everyone benefits from this conduct being dealt with properly.
As Victoria’s legal regulator, we expect lawyers to tell us if they reasonably believe a Victorian lawyer is engaging in serious misconduct.
This aligns with community expectations of lawyers who have agreed to uphold the responsibilities and ethical standards that come with being an officer of the court.
We need to know about serious misconduct that calls into question a lawyer’s fundamental integrity, is so egregious it could lead to a miscarriage of justice, or otherwise undermines the integrity of the justice system.
Our new statement sets out what lawyers should tell us about and how to contact us – so we can determine what action, if any, needs to be taken.
If you have concerns about another lawyer’s serious misconduct, email us at seriousmisconduct@lsbc.vic.gov.au. From 5 January 2026 you will also be able to phone us on (03) 9679 8092.
