New framework sets course for better lawyer wellbeing in Victoria

VLSB+C is pleased to launch a new framework that explores the drivers of poor lawyer wellbeing and defines a shared vision for change within the legal profession at a system level.

Following a 12-month consultation with the Victorian legal profession, the co-designed Lawyer Wellbeing Systems Theory of Change framework builds on VLSB+C’s existing body of research on lawyer wellbeing.

Research has shown, time and time again, that many lawyers experience poor wellbeing. The framework draws on the experiences and expertise of people working in the Victorian legal sector to map exactly what parts of practice are causing poor lawyer wellbeing, and where effort should be focused to make the biggest change.

It’s designed to guide practical action and lasting change at sector, organisational, interpersonal and individual levels, in the short-, medium- and long-term.

Victorian Legal Services Board CEO and Commissioner, Fiona McLeay, said the VLSB+C is committed to a future where lawyer wellbeing is an expectation, and the norm.

“We believe the Systems Theory of Change framework will help the sector work together in the same direction,” Ms McLeay said.

“We invite the Victorian legal sector – especially its leaders – to join us in implementing this framework, which can guide practical solutions across the sector.”

All parts of the legal sector have an opportunity to consider their role and the actions they can take to improve lawyer wellbeing, as presented in the framework. At the VLSB+C, we’ll focus on our actions as regulator, and support the implementation of the Theory of Change within the sector. We’ll provide communications resources, deliver a set of action-based guidelines, and fund pilot projects to drive change where its most effective.
