2026–27 practising certificate renewals now open

01 April 2026

All practising certificates issued in Victoria expire on 30 June 2026. Legal practitioners who intend to keep practising law from 1 July 2026 can now apply to renew their practising certificate.

All Victorian lawyers have received an email today, and we’ll be in touch throughout the renewal period to provide guidance and support. You can also follow us on LinkedIn and Instagram for updates and reminders.

How to apply

All renewal applications are managed through LSB Online. You must complete and submit your own practising certificate renewal application. Renewal applications should not be completed or submitted by a law practice or any third party on your behalf.

We encourage you to submit your application early to allow time for processing and to avoid any interruption to your ability to practise.

  1. Log into LSB Online. You LSB Online username is your practitioner number.
  2. Go to Practising certificates > Renew your practising certificate 2026-27.
  3. Complete the form and pay your practising certificate fee in full using your chosen method (credit card or BPAY). Your application will be considered incomplete until payment is received.
  4. Complete any additional requirements, including trust audits and professional indemnity insurance. If you're covered by the Legal Practitioners' Liability Committee (LPLC), you must use the LPLC Insurance Portal to renew and pay your insurance by 31 May 2026.

Your application will remain pending until all required steps are complete, and we have fully considered your application.

If you need support, take a look at our LSB Online resources and frequently asked questions. You can reset your LSB Online password on the login screen. If your email is outdated, contact us via our lawyer enquiry form.

Disclosures

You will be asked to disclose any new matters that could affect your ability to engage in legal practice. These include criminal convictions and charges (including tax offences), pending criminal proceedings, bankruptcy-related events, and mental health conditions that impact your ability to engage in legal practice.

You don't need to disclose things like parking tickets or speeding fines unless the circumstances or frequency of the offending indicates dishonesty, a disregard for the law (for example, multiple fines over the course of a few months) and/or a risk to consumers.

For more information visit the disclosures section of our website.

If you have already disclosed a matter to us, you don't need to do this again with your renewal.

Removing your supervised legal practice condition

If you have met the requirements, apply to have the supervised legal practice (SLP) condition removed from your practising certificate.

To avoid delays, submit your application to remove the SLP condition separately from your practising certificate renewal.

For more information, visit the SLP section of our website

Not renewing?

If you're not currently in a role requiring a practising certificate, between roles, or taking a break from legal practice and won't require a practising certificate after 1 July, log into LSB Online and complete the not renewing form so we can update our records.

If your circumstances change, you can apply for a practising certificate at that time without incurring a surcharge.

If you are retiring and operate your own law practice, there are additional steps you'll need to take. For more information, please visit the closing a law practice section of our website.

What happens after your applied

An application to renew is not a guaranteed renewal. Once you have made all relevant payments (including insurance, if required), we will assess your application. This may take several weeks, and your application will remain 'pending' during this time. Learn more in our frequently asked questions.

You will receive an email once your application has been processed. Once approved, you can download your practising certificate from LSB Online.

This is a busy and important time in the legal calendar, and we thank you for your patience, diligence and cooperation.
