This page provides data on the legal profession in Victoria as at 1 November 2019.

General information

The total number of registered (practising) lawyers in the state of Victoria as at 1 October 2019 was 23,118. There were 131 new lawyers admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria in October 2019.

Lawyers by age and gender

Female lawyers dominate the 20-29, 30-39 and 40-49 age brackets. Proportionally, female lawyers are significantly under represented in the 50-59 and older age brackets.

Table 1 shows the breakdown of lawyers by age and gender.

Solicitors and barristers by gender

The majority of lawyers registered in Victoria are classified as solicitors, with female solicitors outnumbering male solicitors. Male barristers still outnumber female barristers. Table 2 illustrates the number of male and female lawyers registered as solicitors or barristers in Victoria.

As shown in Table 3, the majority of lawyers are based in the Melbourne CBD, followed by the metropolitan area (suburbs).

General information

The total number of entities registered in Victoria at 1 November 2019 was 9,844. The vast majority of these were sole practitioners. Non-legal employers and Incorporated legal practices employ a similar number of lawyers (Table 4).
