A free government-funded service is available to assist you with applying for compensation under the National Redress Scheme for institutional child sexual abuse.
The knowmore legal service is free, confidential and independent. They can assist you:
- with information on the options available to you, including access to compensation through other schemes and common law rights and claims
- prior to the application, to ensure you understand the requirements and the application process
- after you receive an offer of redress and you elect to seek an internal review of the decision
- with advice on the effect of accepting an offer and what that means for future claims.
Find out more about the service, including contact details, here. A detailed fact sheet on the legal support services available can be accessed here.
You can choose to use your own legal service to obtain advice and assistance. It is important you are aware it may not be free.
Your lawyer must make you aware of the free legal support service available, and must ensure any fees they charge are fair and reasonable and must be proportionately and reasonably incurred.
If your lawyer fails to let you know about access to free legal advice or you are concerned about their professional standards, such as charging unreasonable fees or unnecessary delays, then please contact our office to discuss.
