2026 Lawyer Census

If we seek to better meet needs, the perspective of the legal profession is critical. The Victorian Lawyer Census is an annual opportunity to understand and respond to systemic issues affecting the profession. It creates a powerful voice for the Victorian legal profession, helps us to understand what is working well and what is not, and find ways to enable the profession to be as healthy, sustainable and effective as possible.

Topics in the 2026 survey include:

  • responding to client needs, and technology in practice
  • wellbeing, workplace conditions and career sustainability
  • professional boundaries and workplace behaviour.

It also collects professional and personal demographic information to enable analysis of response patterns across different lawyer groups.

Impact of the 2025 Lawyer Census

In 2025, the survey covered seven key areas: artificial intelligence, lawyer identity and ethics, competency, wellbeing, experiences of uncivil behaviour, and sexual harassment.

The findings from this work have informed policy, guidelines and resources for the legal profession.
