Lawyer Statistics

This page provides data on the legal profession in Victoria as at 31 March 2018.

General information

The total number of registered (practising) lawyers in the state of Victoria as at 31 March 2018 was 22,005. The number of new lawyers admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria between 1 March to 31 March 2018 was 119, leading to a net increase of 101 lawyers across Victoria.

Lawyer statistics

Lawyers by age and gender

Female lawyers dominate the 20-30, 31-40 and 41-50 age brackets. Proportionally, female lawyers are significantly under represented in the 51-60 and older age brackets and beyond.

Solicitors and barristers by gender

The majority of lawyers registered in Victoria are classified as solicitors, with female solicitors outnumbering male solicitors. Male barristers still outnumber female barristers. Table 2 illustrates the number of male and female lawyers registered as solicitors or barristers in Victoria.

General information

The total number of entities registered in Victoria at 31 March 2018 was 9,348. The vast majority of these were sole practitioners, followed by non-legal employers, as illustrated in the Table 4.
