This page provides data on the legal profession in Victoria as at 31 December 2016.

General information

The total number of registered practitioners in the state of Victoria as at 31 December 2016 was 20,584. The number of new practitioners admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria between 1 December to 31 December 2016 was 240.

Practitioner statistics

Practitioners by age and gender

As with the previous reporting year, the majority of legal practitioners registered in Victoria at 31 December 2016 were male. Female practitioners continue to dominate the 20-30 and 31-40 age brackets, and have almost reached parity with male practitioners in the 41-50 age bracket, but are significantly under represented in the 51-60 and older age brackets.

Table 1 shows the breakdown of practitioners by age and gender.

Solicitors and barristers by gender

The majority of legal practitioners registered in Victoria are classified as solicitors, with male solicitors outnumbering female solicitors. Table 2 illustrates the number of male and female legal practitioners registered as solicitors or barristers in Victoria.

The total number of entities registered in Victoria at 31 December 2016 was 9,315. The vast majority of these were sole practitioners, followed by non-legal employers, as illustrated in the Table 4.
