This page provides data on the legal profession in Victoria as at 30 November 2017.

General information

The total number of registered practitioners in the state of Victoria as at 30 November 2017 was 21,406. The number of new practitioners admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria between 1 November to 30 November 2017 was 118.

Practitioner statistics

Practitioners by age and gender

As with the previous reporting year, the majority of legal practitioners registered in Victoria at 30 November 2017 were male. Female practitioners continue to dominate the 20-30 and 31-40 age brackets, and for the first time now dominate the 41-50 age bracket. Female lawyers are significantly under represented in the 51-60 and older age brackets.

Table 1 shows the breakdown of practitioners by age and gender.

Solicitors and barristers by gender

The majority of legal practitioners registered in Victoria are classified as solicitors, with female solicitors now outnumbering female solicitors. Due to the gender disparity among barristers, male practitioners still outnumber female, but only by a small margin. Table 2 illustrates the number of male and female legal practitioners registered as solicitors or barristers in Victoria.

The total number of entities registered in Victoria at 30 November 2017 was 9,089. The vast majority of these were sole practitioners, followed by non-legal employers, as illustrated in the Table 4.
