Victorian Legal Services Board Election 2018
The Victorian Legal Services Board is comprised of a Chairperson, three non-lawyer members and three lawyer members (one barrister and two solicitors). The Chairperson and the three non-lawyer members are appointed by the Governor in Council. The three lawyer members are elected to their positions by the legal profession.
The Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2014 requires that the Board hold an election for the three lawyer member positions every four years. The current term of the three lawyer members expires on 30 June 2018. The Board must therefore hold an election before this date to enable the legal profession to elect their representatives to the Board for the ensuing four-year period.
Electors’ Roll & Eligibility to Vote
To be eligible to vote in this election, a lawyer’s name must appear on one of the two rolls of electors maintained by the Board as of close of business Monday 13 March 2018. Any lawyer with a current practising certificate as at this time is automatically enrolled.
The Board’s two electors’ rolls are:
- The roll of advocates: This roll includes all barristers. Each barrister on the roll of advocates is eligible to vote in the election for the one advocate (barrister) member.
- The roll of non-advocates: This roll includes all solicitors. Each solicitor who is on the roll of non-advocates is eligible to vote in the election for the two non-advocate (solicitor) members.
