Have your say in the 2026 Lawyer Census

As Victoria’s new dedicated Legal Services Research Centre, we are conducting the 2026 Lawyer Census on behalf of the Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (VLSB+C).
11 March 2026

The Victorian legal profession has been invited to have their say in the 2026 Lawyer Census, open from 12 March to 24 April 2026.

Through the Lawyer Census, practicing lawyers in Victoria provide rich insights into critical issues affecting the profession and our justice system.

What can the 2026 Lawyer Census achieve?

We’re seeking the views of Victorian lawyers to highlight areas for improvement and to drive change across the legal sector.

In 2025, 6.4% of Victorian lawyers completed the 10 to 15-minute survey. Those that completed the survey had their say on issues ranging from use of AI in the profession, the prevalence of uncivil behaviours and sexual harassment.

The responses provided rich insights that are being used to improve the experience of working in the legal profession, such as to inform policies and resources that will better support lawyers in a rapidly changing legal landscape.

The aggregated data is also used in comprehensive legal research, publicly available to the legal sector to drive change and innovation over time.

Why take the time to do it?

We want to improve the experience of lawyers in the profession and enhance the experience of consumers of legal services.

This voluntary survey is an opportunity for Victorian lawyers to share their experiences and opinions on key issues currently affecting Victoria’s legal profession. Topics in the 2026 survey include:

  • responding to client needs, and technology in practice

  • wellbeing, workplace conditions and career sustainability

  • professional boundaries and workplace behaviour.

The results also allow us to compare how the profession is progressing over time in a range of areas. Learn more about findings from last year’s census, including the way the census is conducted.

The 2026 Lawyer Census closes Friday 24 April 2026Contact us if you do not receive your invitation to complete the survey.
